Seven In The EveningColossians 3:21

Homework Ends In Tears Most Nights

This message is for the parent who dreads the hour after supper because it ends the same way most nights, and cannot see a way to stop it that does not feel like failing

You start looking at the clock at about half six.

Not consciously. But you know what is coming, and your body knows what is coming, and by the time the book comes out there is already something tight across your shoulders that has nothing to do with the work in it.

And then it goes the way it goes. Somewhere between eight and twenty minutes in, it turns. They cannot do it, or they will not, and you can hear your own voice changing, and then somebody is crying and somebody is angry and the two of you are further apart than you were at tea.

And you finish it anyway, most nights. Because it has to be done, and because stopping feels like letting them down.

I want to take that last part apart, because I think it is the thing that makes this hour so expensive.

You are not carrying on because you believe the last fifteen minutes are teaching them anything. You know they are not. Nothing is going in after it turns, and you can see that as clearly as I can.

You are carrying on because stopping feels like a failure. Yours, mostly. It feels like admitting you cannot manage a page of homework with your own child.

So the hour continues long after it has stopped being useful, and what it is actually doing in that time is not schoolwork. It is teaching both of you what that table is like.

Homework Ends In Tears Most Nights

Lest they be discouraged

There is one line in Colossians written to fathers, and what it is protecting against is very specific.

Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged. (Colossians 3:21, King James Version)

Lest they be discouraged.

Look at the reason given. Not lest they rebel, and not lest they resent you. Discouraged, which is a much quieter thing and much harder to see, and it is what the whole instruction is aimed at preventing.

Discouraged means the courage has gone out. It is the state of a child who has stopped trying, not because they are lazy but because trying has been costing them something and they have quietly worked out that it is not worth it.

And the verse assumes this happens by degrees, through repeated ordinary moments, rather than in one large event. Nobody discourages a child in one evening. It is what accumulates across many evenings that look roughly like the one coming tonight.

You have been guarding against something slow rather than something sudden, and no single evening has ever once been able to do what a pattern of them does. Colossians 3:21 names discouragement as a state that arrives by degrees, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a relief rather than a longer list of things to watch.

That is a serious thing to have in scripture, and it is aimed at the parent rather than at the child. And what it protects is not the parent's authority or the work getting done. It protects the child's willingness to keep trying, and it treats that willingness as the thing most worth guarding.

You are guarding something more important than the page, and heaven has never once ranked the homework above the courage. Colossians 3:21 names discouragement as what the instruction exists to prevent, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a permission rather than one more thing to fail at.

Nothing goes in after it turns

Here is the practical claim, and it is not a soft one.

Once it has turned, the learning has stopped.

That is not a theory about children, it is what is happening at that table. A child who is crying, or braced, or furious, is not taking anything in about fractions. Whatever the next twenty minutes contains, it is not schoolwork, and the full price gets paid for it anyway.

You have been paying for twenty minutes that have never once delivered anything. Colossians 3:21 puts the protection of a child's willingness above the completion of a page, and the Spirit of God is the one who lets a parent count what the last stretch actually costs.

So the choice at that moment is not between finishing the work and not finishing it. It is between two versions of not finishing it: one where you stop, and one where you carry on and it costs the evening.

And there is a second cost, which is the one Colossians is pointing at. Every night that ends badly teaches them something about what happens at this table, and after enough of those, the resistance starts earlier and earlier, until you are having the argument before the book is open. If that has already started, you are not imagining it and it is not defiance. It is a child who has learned what this hour is.

You are choosing between two versions of unfinished, and finishing after it turns has never once been one of the options. The written word aims the whole instruction at preventing a slow loss of courage, and the Spirit of God is the one who lets a parent stop while the work is undone.

Ten minutes, and stop when it goes

So here is the assignment, and I am giving it plainly because a hedged version of this is useless.

Set a timer for ten minutes tonight, and stop when it goes, finished or not.

Ten minutes. Say it to them before you start: we are doing ten minutes and then we are stopping, whatever we have got to.

And then actually stop. Even if it is going well. Especially if it is going well, because that is what makes tomorrow possible, and because a child who knows there is an end stops bracing at the beginning.

If the work is not finished, it is not finished. Send it in unfinished, or write a note, or do neither. I know that is uncomfortable, and I know some of you have a school where it will be mentioned. That is a smaller cost than the one you have been paying every night.

Colossians 3:21 puts the protection of a child's courage above the completion of the task, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present at a table where somebody closes a book on time.

You are able to stop with the work undone, and it has never once been a failure to protect the willingness underneath it. Colossians 3:21 names discouragement as the thing to be avoided, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with you when the timer goes.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over somebody watching the clock at half six.

You are not failing your child by stopping, and nothing has ever once gone into a child after the evening turned. I am not promising you an easy hour and I am not giving you a way to get the work finished. Colossians 3:21 says provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who gives a parent permission to close a book early.

And this, which is the word I came with:

This table does not have to be a battle, and you can stop early and both of you have never once needed the page finished to be alright. The written word puts a child's willingness to keep trying above the completion of the work, and the Spirit of God is the one who is at that table with you tonight.

Ten minutes. Stop when it goes.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Hour after supper that I dread, you do not get the whole evening tonight. Colossians 3:21 says provoke not your children to anger, so by the Holy Spirit I set ten minutes and I stop when it goes in the name of Jesus.
  2. Feeling that stopping is failing, you were never true. The word aims the whole instruction at keeping courage in a child rather than at getting work finished, and by the Holy Spirit I am done paying for twenty minutes where nothing goes in.
  3. Father, You put the danger in a child losing heart and You said it to the parent. Your word says lest they be discouraged, so by Your Spirit I close the book on time, and I let it be unfinished, and we are both still alright.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
