I Won The Evening By Taking Something Away

It worked, and that is the whole problem.

Twenty minutes of going nowhere, and then you said the thing, and the page got done. Quietly. Fast. No more argument.

And then you sat downstairs afterward and felt worse than you have felt on nights when nothing got finished at all.

Most people would tell you that is guilt about being firm, and that you should let it go. I do not think that is what it is. I think you noticed something accurate, and you have not had a way to say it, and it has been sitting in you sideways ever since.

Here is what I think you noticed. Something in the room complied, and something else in the room left.

And you would not be able to explain any of this to anybody. If you described the evening out loud it sounds like a parent being firm and a child doing their work, which is what everybody says you should do. There is nothing in the account of it that would explain why you have been thinking about it for four days.

Not by might, nor by power

There is a line in Zechariah spoken to a man facing a job too big for him, and the surprising thing is what it rules out.

Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts. (Zechariah 4:6, King James Version)

It does not say might and power are useless. It says they are not what this particular thing runs on.

And notice that both words are being ruled out together. Might is force. Power is capacity, resource, leverage. Everything you can bring to bear on a situation, in other words, is on the list of things that will not do it.

That is not a rebuke of strength. It is a statement about mechanism. Some things simply do not respond to pressure, and they do not respond to pressure however much of it arrives.

You have been handed a distinction between what pressure can move and what it cannot, and heaven has never once treated compliance as the same thing as change. Zechariah 4:6 rules out both might and power by name, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a parent see what their leverage actually purchased.

And the man being spoken to was not being told to do nothing. He had a real job in front of him. He was being told which engine it ran on.

You were never being asked to stop being the adult in your house, and no verse has ever once left a parent without authority. The written word names the engine rather than removing the work, and the Spirit of God is the one who supplies what force could not.

What the compliance cost

So let us be precise about what happened on that evening, because you deserve a real account rather than a vague unease.

You had a real problem. Twenty minutes gone, nothing moving, a child who could not or would not, and you out of ideas. Anybody would reach for the lever.

And the lever works. That is what a lever is for. It converts your resource into their motion, quickly and reliably.

But look at what got moved. The pencil moved. The page got filled.

You have a clear view of exactly what changed and exactly what did not, and clarity has never once been the same thing as an accusation. Zechariah 4:6 puts might and power on one side and the Spirit on the other, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a man look at Tuesday without flinching.

What did not move was the thing that was actually stuck, which was whatever was going on in a child at half past seven that made the page impossible in the first place. That is still in there, unexamined, and now it has something on top of it.

You are able to see exactly what a lever moved and what it did not, and honest sight has never once been the same thing as self reproach. Zechariah 4:6 separates might from the thing only the Spirit accomplishes, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that separation visible without condemning the person looking.

And there is a second cost, and it is the one you felt on the sofa.

You spent something to get that page. Not money. Standing. A child learned, in a very small way, that the route through you is compliance rather than conversation, and children file that quickly and quietly.

It is recoverable. It is one evening. But your unease was not irrational, and I am not going to talk you out of it, because it is the most useful thing you have got.

You have an instinct that is working correctly, and discomfort after a win has never once been a malfunction. The written word rules out force as the mechanism for the thing that matters, and the Spirit of God is the one who gave you the uneasiness in the first place.

You are not being accused of anything tonight, and there has never once been a verdict in a moment of seeing clearly. Zechariah 4:6 is spoken as encouragement to a man with a job to finish, and it is the Holy Spirit who keeps a true observation from turning into a charge.

One real question, first

So here is the thing to put in the lever's place, and it is one sentence.

Before anything else tomorrow, ask one real question. Not a rhetorical one. Not what is wrong with you tonight. Something you genuinely do not know the answer to.

Which bit of this is the worst bit. What happened at school today. Is it the writing or the thinking.

You are able to hold a question open, and a question held open has never once been the same thing as a demand. The written word names the Spirit as the engine for what force cannot reach, and the Spirit of God is the one who works in the part of a conversation nobody is filling.

Then stay quiet. Long enough to be uncomfortable. Most of us ask a question and then fill the silence four seconds later with our own theory, and a child never gets into the gap.

You may get nothing. Plenty of children say I do not know, and mean it, and that is a real answer.

But you will have gone in through a different door, and the difference between a lever and a question is the difference between moving somebody and reaching them.

You are permitted to ask instead of push, and asking has never once been the weaker of the two positions. The written word names the Spirit as the engine for what force cannot do, and the Spirit of God is the one who fills a gap a parent leaves on purpose.

You have everything you need for one question and a long pause, and it has never once required you to already know the answer. Zechariah 4:6 rules out capacity as the mechanism, and the Holy Spirit is the one who works in the quiet after somebody asks.
