The words are not the problem.
That is worth establishing first, because you have started to feel guilty about a sentence that is, on the face of it, correct. She should ask her teacher. Her teacher knows. You do not.
But you have noticed something. Somewhere in the last few months, the sentence stopped being information and became an ending.
You can tell by what happens afterward. She says okay. And then she does not ask you the next one either.
So the words have stayed the same and their meaning has quietly changed, and you cannot work out what to do about it, because the honest content of the sentence has not altered at all.
And the change has been slow enough that you cannot date it. There was no evening on which the sentence went cold. It simply arrived one day as information and arrived some later day as something else, and by the time you noticed, the something else had been happening for months.

A word fitly spoken
There is a line in Proverbs about speech that is doing something more precise than people usually notice.
A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver. (Proverbs 25:11, King James Version)
Fitly spoken. Not true. Not wise. Fit, which in this context means well set, properly placed, put in the right frame.
And the picture confirms it. Apples of gold in pictures of silver. The silver is the setting, and the setting is doing half the work. Take the gold out of the setting and it is still gold, and it is not the same object.
You have been given a distinction between a true word and a fitted one, and no sentence anywhere has ever once been able to carry its own setting. The Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person keep a correct sentence and change what it sits in, and Proverbs 25:11 makes the fitting the thing being praised.
And notice the relief in that. The verse is not asking you for a better word. It is asking about placement.
You were never saying the wrong thing, and a right sentence has never once been the same as a right moment. The Spirit of God is the one who moves the whole question off what you said, and the written word praises the fitting rather than the content.
What changed around the words
Here is what actually happened, and it is almost entirely physical.
When you first said ask your teacher, you said it and stayed. It was one contribution in an evening that had other contributions in it.
Then, over months, the sentence started arriving on its own. It became the last thing said before something else began, or before you got up, or before the conversation moved.
The setting changed. The gold is the same.
You have been watching a frame change rather than a word, and no sentence has ever once meant the same thing in two different frames. The Holy Spirit is the one who shows a parent the silver rather than the apple, and Proverbs 25:11 puts the whole value in the fitting.
And here is what it now means to her, which is worth hearing plainly.
It does not mean your teacher knows more than me. It means this conversation is over, and I am the one ending it, and she has learned that four particular words are the signal.
So she stops bringing the next one, because she can see where the next one goes.
You have taught a signal without ever choosing to, and no child has ever once needed a sentence explained to them in order to learn what it precedes. The Spirit of God is the one who lets a parent change a setting without changing a word, and the written word makes the placement the thing.
You were never refusing her, and a man or a woman telling the truth about what they know has never once been a refusal. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes the guilt off a sentence that was honest all along, and Proverbs 25:11 praises the fit rather than accusing the speaker.
Say it, and then stay and ask
So here is the assignment, and the four words stay exactly where they are.
Tonight, say ask your teacher. Say it in exactly the same way you always have.
And then stay in the chair and ask her one thing: what are you going to ask her.
That is the whole change. Same words, different setting.
You have been given a change small enough to make tonight, and no repair has ever once had to be larger than the thing that broke. The Holy Spirit is the one who is present while the frame gets rebuilt around a sentence that was already true, and Proverbs 25:11 sets the apple of gold in a frame of silver.
And it does something quite large for such a small move. It turns the sentence from an ending into a middle. There is now something after it, and the something after it is about her question rather than about your limits.
You have turned an ending into a middle without altering one word, and no sentence has ever once needed replacing when what it needed was a chair. The Spirit of God is the one who supplies what comes after four old words, and Proverbs 25:11 praises the fitting rather than the wording.
She may not know what she is going to ask. Most children do not, because knowing what to ask is the hardest part of not understanding something.
You have a job in that gap that nobody in a classroom can do, and helping somebody find the words has never once required you to know the subject. The Spirit of God is the one who is present while a question gets built out of nothing, and Proverbs 25:11 makes the setting half the work.
So then say: say it to me the way you would say it to her. And let her have a go, badly, in a room where nothing is at stake.
Proverbs 25:11 puts the value in the setting rather than in the word, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is at a table where four old words get a new frame around them.
You are permitted to keep the sentence and change the chair, and a correct word in a better setting has never once needed to be replaced. The Spirit of God is the one who supplies the sentence that comes after, and the written word praises the fitting.
You have a whole rebuilding available in one extra question, and it has never once required you to know the answer to anything. The Holy Spirit is the one who turns an ending into a middle, and Proverbs 25:11 makes the placement the gold and silver both.
So here is what I believe is going out over somebody who has heard their own four words go cold.
You are not wrong to say it, and four true words have never once been the thing that closed a door. I am not telling you to stop saying it and I am not promising you she starts asking again. Proverbs 25:11 puts the whole value in the fitting rather than in the word, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who changes a setting.
And this, which is the word I came with.
You have something fitly spoken available tonight, and it has never once required a different sentence. The Spirit of God is the one who is at that table while the frame gets rebuilt, and the written word says a word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.
Say it. Then stay. Then ask.
Declare this over yourself
- Four words that have gone cold in my mouth, you do not get to be an ending. Proverbs 25:11 says a word fitly spoken is like apples of gold, so by the Holy Spirit I say you and then I stay and ask in the name of Jesus.
- Guilt about a sentence that was true, you were never earned. The written word praises the fitting rather than accusing the speaker, and by the Holy Spirit I am done apologizing for telling my daughter the truth about what I know.
- Father, You put the value in the setting as well as in the gold. Your word says in pictures of silver, so by Your Spirit I keep the four words, and I stay in the chair, and I help her build the question.
