I Am Just Not A Math Person

It arrives as a whole identity.

Not: this one is beyond me. Not: this is hard. I am just not a math person, said in the tone of somebody reporting a settled and slightly boring fact about themselves, like being tall.

And you argue with the subject. You say it is not that bad. You say you will get it. You say lots of people find it hard at first.

And none of that touches it, because the sentence was never about the subject.

There are seven words in there and you have been arguing with the wrong six.

And what makes it hard to answer is the calm. There is no upset in it. A child who is upset can be comforted, and a child who is angry can be talked to. A child who is reporting a settled fact about themselves, in an ordinary voice, over a bowl of cereal, has left you nothing obvious to take hold of.

Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind

There is an instruction in Romans that most people read as being about behavior and is actually about categories.

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. (Romans 12:2, King James Version)

Renewing of your mind. Not renewing of your effort, and not renewing of your conduct. The mind, which in this context means the way things are sorted, categorized and understood.

And notice the purpose clause. That ye may prove. Renewed categories are what make it possible to test something properly, which means the categories come first and the accurate seeing comes second.

So scripture is describing a mechanism where the words a person uses for a thing determine what they can find out about it.

You have been handed a claim about categories rather than about effort, and no amount of trying has ever once been able to correct a thing that was filed in the wrong place. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a practical matter of one word in a kitchen, and Romans 12:2 puts the renewing in the mind and the proving after it.

And conformed is worth a second, too. It means pressed into a shape from outside. A category can be handed to a person by the room they are standing in, and worn as though it came from inside.

You were never watching your child describe himself, and a sentence in that shape has never once originated with the person saying it. The Spirit of God is the one who tells the difference between a self report and an inherited shape, and the written word names the pressing from outside explicitly.

The word is am

Here is the whole of the practical part, and it is one word long.

I am just not a math person.

The word doing all the work in that sentence is am. It is a statement of being, and a statement of being has no time in it and no conditions on it. It does not describe a Tuesday. It describes a person, permanently.

Compare: I find this hard at the moment. Same difficulty, entirely different category. One describes a situation with an edge on it and the other describes a fixed property of a boy.

You are looking at a category error rather than a lack of confidence, and no reassurance has ever once been able to move a word like am. The Holy Spirit is the one who shows a parent exactly which word to go after, and Romans 12:2 makes the renewing of the mind the thing that comes first.

And this is why arguing about the subject fails every time.

Saying it is not that bad disputes the difficulty. He is not claiming the difficulty is large. He is claiming it is permanent and that it is him.

So he wins every exchange, because the answer keeps arriving at a question he did not ask.

You have been answering the wrong half of a sentence, and a boy defending a fact about himself has never once been arguing about a subject. The Spirit of God is the one who moves a conversation to where it can actually go, and the written word puts the accurate seeing downstream of the renewed category.

You were never losing because you were wrong, and no parent anywhere has ever once won an argument that was about the wrong word. The Holy Spirit is the one who supplies the one substitution that matters, and Romans 12:2 names the mind as the place the change happens.

Change one word, out loud, once

So here is the assignment, and it is one substitution and you only do it once.

Tonight, when it comes up, say the sentence back with one word changed.

You find this hard at the moment.

Then stop. Do not explain the substitution. Do not say and that is different from being a math person, because the second it gets explained it becomes a technique, and he will hear the technique instead of the sentence.

Just say it, ordinarily, as though it were agreement, which in a way it is. It agrees with the difficulty and declines the category.

You have a way to say yes and no in the same six words, and no sentence has ever once had to choose between the two. The Spirit of God is the one who makes one substitution carry both halves, and Romans 12:2 separates the shape pressed on from outside from the renewing of the mind.

And then do it again tomorrow, and the day after, in exactly the same flat way. This is not a conversation, it is a substitution, and substitutions work by repetition rather than by force.

Some children notice within a week and say you always say that. That is not a failure. That is the word having been noticed, which is the entire object of the exercise.

Romans 12:2 puts the renewing in the mind and the proving after it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is at a table where one word gets quietly changed.

You are permitted to agree with the difficulty and decline the category, and those two have never once had to be accepted together. The Spirit of God is the one who makes a single word carry that much, and the written word separates the shaping from the proving.

You have one substitution to make tonight, and it has never once needed to be argued for. The Holy Spirit is the one who does the slow part while a parent says six ordinary words, and Romans 12:2 renews the mind rather than persuading it.
