I Have Never Told Anyone I Read Slowly

You have never said it out loud.

Not to your partner, not to your closest friend, not once in an adult life that has included jobs and forms and interviews and a mortgage application.

You learned to work around it so early that the working around is invisible even to you. You read the first paragraph and the last. You ask people what something says rather than reading it in front of them. You take things away to look at later, and later is when you are on your own and can go at your own speed.

And it has worked. That is the thing nobody says about this. It has worked for decades.

And now there is a child at your table with a reading book, and the arrangement has met the one situation it was never built for, which is being asked to read out loud, slowly, beside somebody who is watching your face.

Ye shall know the truth

There is a line in John that has been printed on so many buildings that its actual claim has gone quiet.

And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. (John 8:32, King James Version)

Two verbs, and the order matters. Know, then free. The freedom is downstream of the knowing.

And know here does not mean be informed about. It means something closer to be acquainted with, to have looked at directly, to be on terms with.

So the freedom is not offered to somebody who has worked out the truth in principle. It is offered to somebody who has actually come into contact with it.

You have been informed about this for thirty years and have never once been on terms with it. The Holy Spirit is the one who moves a person from one to the other, and John 8:32 makes the knowing the thing that frees rather than the fact itself.

And it is worth saying what the truth in question actually is, because most of us have it wrong.

The truth is not that you are slow. That is a description of one function, and it is not a truth about a person. The truth is: this is true about me, and it can be said, and the world does not end.

You were never hiding a truth about yourself, and there has never once been a fact about how a mind works that amounted to a verdict on the person. The Spirit of God is the one who separates a description from an identity, and the written word attaches the freedom to the knowing rather than to the fixing.

What the arrangement costs

Let me be honest about the accounting, because you deserve better than encouragement.

The arrangement works. I said that and I meant it. It is something genuinely effective, and most of it got built before the age of twelve.

But it has one cost, and it is not the one you would expect. It is not the effort of maintaining it, although that is real.

It is that everything anyone has ever said about you, every good thing, every bit of trust, every promotion, arrives through a small filter that says: they do not know.

You have never once received a compliment at full strength, and no good word has ever been able to get past a thing that was not disclosed. The Holy Spirit is the one who shows a person what a lifetime of that filter has cost, and John 8:32 puts freedom on the far side of the knowing.

And there is the part about tonight, which is more immediate.

A child learning to read is doing the most exposed thing in their entire day. They are reading out loud, badly, at a pace they cannot control, in front of an adult whose opinion is the most important opinion in the world to them.

And beside them is a person who knows precisely what that feels like and has never said so.

You have the one piece of company in this house that has never once been offered, and it has never once required you to read any faster. The Spirit of God is the one who is at a table where two people are reading slowly, and the written word makes the knowing the doorway rather than the achievement.

You were never disqualified from that chair, and nothing about the pace a person reads at has ever once determined what they are worth beside a child. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes the first acquaintance survivable, and John 8:32 frees through acquaintance with the truth.

Say it once, to one person

So here is the thing, and I am not going to dress it up.

Tell one person, tonight, out loud.

One. Not a room. Not your child, unless you want to, and there is no requirement in that direction at all. One adult you choose.

Say the actual sentence. I read slowly. I have never told anybody that.

Then stop. Do not explain it, do not give the history, do not preemptively manage their reaction. Let there be a pause. The pause is where the thing gets its real dimensions.

You are able to leave a sentence standing without guarding it, and a truth has never once needed a defense attached to survive four seconds of silence. The Spirit of God is the one who stands in the quiet right after it is said, and John 8:32 makes the knowing itself the thing that frees.

Most people, it turns out, say something completely ordinary in response. Some say it about themselves.

And if the person you pick does not respond well, that is information about them and it is not information about you, and you will still have said it, which is the part that cannot be taken back.

John 8:32 makes the knowing the thing that frees, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present in the four seconds after somebody says a sentence they have never said.

You are permitted to say a true sentence about yourself out loud, and saying it has never once been the same act as being reduced by it. The Spirit of God is the one who is in the pause afterward, and the written word puts freedom on the other side of the knowing.

You have carried this alone long enough for it to count as carried, and it has never once been required to be carried alone from here. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes one person enough, and John 8:32 offers the freedom through contact with the truth.
