I Said It About Myself The Same Week

You heard it and something went cold.

Not because of what he said. Because of the shape of it, and the little shrug that came with it, and the fact that you knew immediately where he had got it.

You had said something almost identical about yourself. Probably on the Tuesday, about a form, or a bill, or a thing on a screen you could not work out. It was a throwaway line. It took less than two seconds.

And here it is, four days later, in a smaller voice.

Now, I am not going to spend this article telling you to watch your language, because that would give you one more thing to police and no more capacity to police it with. I want to do something better than that.

Out of the abundance of the heart

There is a sentence in Luke that explains the mechanism precisely.

A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. (Luke 6:45, King James Version)

Abundance is the word doing the work. It means overflow. What comes out of a mouth is not a decision, it is a spill.

Which means the throwaway line was not carelessness. It was contents. It was what was in there, arriving at the surface in an unguarded moment about a form.

You are looking at contents rather than at a slip, and no mouth has ever once produced something that was not already in stock. The Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person look at the stock without flinching, and Luke 6:45 makes the speech an overflow rather than a choice.

And this is exactly why watching your language cannot work as a strategy. You can guard an exit. You cannot guard it at half past six on a Tuesday when a form will not submit, because that is the moment the guard is off duty.

You were never going to succeed by watching the door, and no guard anywhere has ever once been on duty in the moment that matters. The Spirit of God is the one who works upstream of the mouth, and the written word puts the source before the speech.

What he actually took

Let me be precise about what your son learned, because it is not what you think and the difference matters.

He did not learn that he is stupid. He learned something more durable than that. He learned what a person does when they cannot do a thing.

That is the lesson. Not the content, the procedure. When a grown man meets something he cannot do, he says a short sentence about his own mind and then he stops.

And a procedure copies far better than a belief. Beliefs get argued with. Procedures just get used.

You have been handing over a method rather than an opinion, and no child has ever once needed to agree with something in order to copy it. The Holy Spirit is the one who shows a parent what got transmitted, and Luke 6:45 makes the mouth the visible end of something stored.

And here is why that is genuinely good news, and I want you to have it before the practical part.

If it is a procedure, it can be replaced by another procedure. You do not have to undo a belief in a child, which is slow and largely outside your control. You have to show him a different thing to do at the same moment, and you can do that this week, at a table, without saying one word about him.

You have a way in that has never once required a single conversation about your son. The Spirit of God is the one who changes what is in stock rather than what gets policed, and the written word locates the source in the heart and the demonstration in the mouth.

You were never going to fix this by apologizing for Tuesday, and no apology has ever once replaced a procedure. The Holy Spirit is the one who deals with the supply, and Luke 6:45 attends to the abundance rather than to the incident.

Say one true good thing about your own mind

So here is the assignment, and it is about you, out loud, in front of him.

Tonight, say one true good thing about your own mind.

Not a boast, and not a performance of confidence, which children detect instantly. A plain and specific and honest observation, said in an ordinary voice, in his hearing.

I am quite good at working out where a fault is. I remember faces from years ago. I can do figures in my head faster than most people at work.

You have a second version available if the first one will not come, and neither of them has ever once required you to feel confident while saying it. The Spirit of God is the one who supplies the words on a night when the store looks empty, and Luke 6:45 makes the mouth the overflow of a store rather than a performance.

Or, if that is genuinely too far tonight, say the procedural version instead, which is the same lesson in a different form: I do not know how to do this yet, so I am looking it up.

That sentence is the whole of what you are trying to teach him. It contains a real not knowing and a next move, and it takes about three seconds.

Luke 6:45 puts the speech downstream of what is in the heart, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is at a table where a parent says something true and good about themselves out loud.

You are permitted to speak well of your own mind in front of your child, and doing so has never once been vanity. The Spirit of God is the one who makes an honest good word possible in a mouth that has been saying the other kind, and the written word calls it a treasure brought forth.

You have the whole lesson in one sentence tonight, and it has never once needed to be about him at all. The Holy Spirit is the one who changes what is in the supply, and Luke 6:45 traces the speech to the supply.
