I Still Know The Name Of My Group

You could say it right now without thinking about it.

Whatever they called it. A color, a bird, a shape, some cheerful word chosen by an adult who thought nobody would work out the order. And everybody worked out the order by the second week.

That is the thing about those names. They were meant to be neutral and they were the least neutral words in the building, and thirty years later you can still say yours.

And now somebody mentions what group your child is in, and something happens in you before you have had a chance to think. It is quick and it is physical and it arrives long before any actual information does.

I am not going to tell you to let it go. I want to do something more useful, which is to show you where it is operating, so you can stop being ambushed by it at a kitchen table.

Remember ye not the former things

There is a sentence in Isaiah that is often used to tell people to stop dwelling on the past, which is not quite what it is doing.

Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. (Isaiah 43:18, King James Version)

Look at the verb in the second half. Consider. That is not the same as remember. Considering is weighing, taking into account, using something as a factor in a judgment.

So the instruction is not that the memory should disappear. It is that the old thing must not be allowed to vote on the present one.

And the very next verse says behold, I will do a new thing. The instruction is not an erasure. It is a clearing of the floor so something else can be seen.

You are permitted to remember a word without letting it weigh in, and scripture has never once asked anybody to lose their own past in order to be free of it. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes that distinction usable at a kitchen table, and Isaiah 43:18 forbids the considering rather than the remembering.

And it matters that this is spoken to people who had been through something real. It is not addressed to the lightly inconvenienced.

You were never told your old group did not hurt, and the written word has never once required a person to minimize what happened to them. The Spirit of God is the one who separates honoring a memory from consulting it, and Isaiah 43:18 addresses people with a genuine history.

Where the old name actually operates

Here is the precise mechanism, and once you see it you cannot unsee it.

The old name does not usually show up as a thought. It shows up as speed.

Somebody says which group your daughter is in, and a reaction arrives before the sentence is finished. It already knows what it means. It already knows what it will mean in three years. A whole trajectory gets assembled out of a single word, and none of it came from anything anybody said tonight.

You have been handed a verdict by something that was not in the room, and no thirty year old word has ever once seen a single page of tonight's work. The Holy Spirit is the one who names the speed itself as the tell, and Isaiah 43:18 rules the former things out of the considering entirely.

That is the old group voting. It is not memory, it is jurisdiction.

You are watching a thirty year old word rule on evidence it has never seen, and no verdict has ever once been reached that fast honestly. The Holy Spirit is the one who slows a person down enough to notice who is speaking, and Isaiah 43:18 rules the old thing out of the deliberation.

And there is a cost to your child in it, which is worth naming gently.

When the old name is voting, you are not actually in the room with your daughter. You are in a classroom in the eighties with a laminated chart on the wall. And she is sitting in front of you needing the parent who is actually here.

You have a child in front of you who has never once been in the room that frightened you. The Spirit of God is the one who brings a parent back into the present tense, and the written word puts the former things outside the reckoning.

And I want to say one more thing, because some of you will need it. Being in a lower group as a child was not a verdict on you either. It was an administrative decision made by a tired adult on partial information, and it has had a far longer life than it deserved.

You were never the name they gave the table you sat at, and it has never once been anything other than a word on a piece of card. The Holy Spirit is the one who lifts a label off an adult who has been wearing it since primary school, and Isaiah 43:18 refuses the old thing a place in the judgment.

Say it out loud, then say what is actually there

So here is the thing to do tonight, and it has two halves.

First, say the name of your old group out loud once, to yourself, in a room by yourself. Just the word.

It will feel stupid and it will also do something, because a word said out loud in the present tense is a smaller object than a word that has only ever been thought.

You have the authority to bring an old word into the daylight, and a thing said out loud in the present tense has never once stayed the size it was in the dark. The Spirit of God is the one who is in a kitchen with somebody saying a single strange syllable to nobody, and the written word forbids the old thing a place in the reckoning.

Second, at the table tonight, say out loud what is actually on the page. Plainly, like a description. There are eight questions here. This one is about fractions. Three are done.

That is the whole exercise. The first half brings the old word into the daylight. The second half puts the present tense back in charge of the table.

Isaiah 43:18 rules the former thing out of the considering, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present when somebody describes what is actually on a page.

You are able to say what is in front of you rather than what it reminds you of, and description has never once been the same act as prediction. The Spirit of God is the one who keeps a parent in the room they are actually sitting in, and the written word forbids consulting the old thing.

You have tonight available in the present tense, and it has never once required the old classroom to be resolved first. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes that enough for a Tuesday, and Isaiah 43:18 clears the floor rather than demanding a finished healing.
