There was a year when you could still follow it.
You could look at the page and see what they were being asked, and even if you had to think, you got there, and you could be useful for twenty minutes.
That has gone. It went at some point in the last year or two, and it did not announce itself. You looked at the page one evening and it was genuinely beyond you, and you said something vague and got up to do something in the kitchen.
And since then you have been sitting down less. Not deliberately. It is that being at the table without being able to help is worse than not being there, because at least in the kitchen you are doing something.
So the table has emptied out. They work on their own now, and you are somewhere else in the house, and you tell yourself it is fine and they probably prefer it.
I want to say something about that, and it will sound too simple, and I want you to test it against your own memory rather than believe me.
They do not need you to know the answer. They never mainly did.
What was happening in those useful twenty minutes was not the transmission of arithmetic. It was that somebody was at the table with them while they did a hard thing. The arithmetic was the reason to be there. It was never the thing you were giving them.

They sat down with him upon the ground
There is a moment in Job that is almost never preached, and it is the best description of useful presence in the Bible.
So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great. (Job 2:13, King James Version)
They sat down with him upon the ground, and none spake a word.
Those are Job's friends, and everybody knows what they became later, and I am not defending the speeches. But before all of that, they did this.
Seven days. Nothing said. They came, they got down on the ground where he was, and they stayed there.
You have been shown the one thing scripture records those men doing right, and it has never once involved saying anything at all. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a model for ten minutes at a kitchen table, and Job 2:13 puts seven silent days on the record.
And the reason is given plainly: for they saw that his grief was very great. They understood the size of it, and their response to something too big to fix was not to fix it. It was to be there and be quiet.
That is recorded, in scripture, as what they did right, and it is the only part of their conduct in that book that nobody criticizes.
Presence, with no solution attached, is not what you do when you have nothing to offer. It is a thing in its own right, and it is treated in that passage as the appropriate response to something a person cannot solve for somebody else.
You are able to sit with somebody in a hard thing without solving it, and it has never once been what people do when they have nothing to give. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a real offering rather than a consolation, and Job 2:13 records seven days of silent company as the right response.
What sitting there actually does
Here is the practical claim, and it is not sentimental.
A child working alone on something hard has to hold two things: the work, and the fact that it is hard. The second one costs more than the first.
When somebody is in the room, the second one gets smaller. Not because the person helps. Because a difficulty faced with company is a different size from the same difficulty faced alone, and every adult knows this from their own working life. Most people have sat in an office doing something dull because other people were also there, and would not have done it at home.
You have been able to shrink one of two burdens simply by being in a room, and no help anywhere has ever once been cheaper than that. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes presence a genuine act rather than a consolation, and Job 2:13 has the friends sit down on the ground and say nothing.
That is what was being given all those years, and it is what stopped when the chair emptied.
And here is the part that surprises people: it works better when the adult cannot help. A parent who can help is a parent who might lean over, take the pencil, and finish the line. A parent who genuinely cannot follow the work is simply present, and a child can be stuck in front of them without anything being taken over.
You have an advantage at that table that has never once been available to somebody who understands the work. The Spirit of God is the one who makes not knowing into the safer presence, and the written word records seven days of sitting and no speech at all.
You have more to offer at this table now than you did three years ago, and you have been reading it exactly backwards.
You are able to make a hard thing smaller by being in the room, and it has never once required you to understand the work. The Spirit of God is the one who is with a parent who cannot help and stays anyway, and the written word records company without speech as the fitting response.
Ten minutes, and answer nothing
So here is the assignment, and the second half is the discipline.
Sit with them for ten minutes while they work, and answer nothing.
Take something of your own. A book, a form, a thing that has been waiting three weeks. Sit at the same table, do that, and be there.
You are bringing your own work rather than watching theirs, and a person doing something beside a child has never once been the same as a person supervising one. The Holy Spirit is the one who is present at a table with two unrelated jobs on it, and Job 2:13 puts the friends on the ground beside the man rather than over him.
And answer nothing. If they ask, say: I do not know that one, and stay in the chair. Do not go and look it up on a phone, because that turns a person into a device, and it puts the whole evening back into the business of supplying answers that are not there to supply.
Do not comment on how it is going. Do not ask if they are stuck. Do not glance over.
You are furniture with a pulse for ten minutes, deliberately, and that has never once been nothing to the person beside you. The Spirit of God is the one who makes a deliberate uselessness into company, and Job 2:13 records the sitting and the silence as the thing they did right.
And say nothing about what you are doing. Do not announce that you are going to sit with them. Just bring something and sit down.
Job 2:13 has the friends sit on the ground and say nothing at all, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present at a table where somebody is quietly staying.
You are able to stay without supplying anything, and it has never once been the answers that made your company worth having. The Spirit of God is the one who is at the table with both of you, and Job 2:13 puts seven days of silence on record as the right thing.
So here is what I believe is going out over somebody who has stopped sitting down.
You are not useless at that table, and being unable to follow the work has never once been the same as having nothing to give. I am not promising you they do better and I am not going to suggest you catch up on the subject. Job 2:13 says so they sat down with him upon the ground, and none spake a word unto him, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who gets a parent back into a chair they left a year ago.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You are the one who stays at that table, and knowing the answer has never once been what turned company into help. The Spirit of God is the one who is in the room with you both, and the written word puts silent presence on record as the right response to something too big to fix.
Ten minutes. Bring your own thing. Answer nothing.
Declare this over yourself
- Work that has gone past me, you do not get to move me out of this room. Job 2:13 says so they sat down with him upon the ground, so by the Holy Spirit I sit at that table for ten minutes tonight in the name of Jesus.
- Belief that I have nothing to give, you were never true, and you have cost me a year of evenings. The word records silent company as the fitting response to what cannot be fixed, and by the Holy Spirit I am done leaving the room because I do not know the answer.
- Father, You kept seven days of saying nothing on the record and nobody has ever criticized that part. Your word says none spake a word unto him, so by Your Spirit I bring my own thing to that table, and I answer nothing, and I stay.
