I Look It Up Under The Table

It is in your lap.

Angled slightly away. Screen brightness down. And while she is working through the second question you are quietly finding out how the method goes, so that when she asks you can answer as though you knew.

And it works, in the sense that she gets an answer. It also costs you the entire ten minutes, and that is the part nobody counts.

Because you cannot be in a room and be managing a disguise in the same ten minutes. Your attention is doing two jobs, and the one it is not doing well is the one you sat down for.

And you have been doing it long enough now that it has stopped feeling like a decision. It is simply how homework happens in this house. Phone in the lap, angle away, answer confidently, and nobody has ever said a word about any of it.

Thou desirest truth in the inward parts

There is a line in Psalm 51 that goes deeper than conduct.

Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. (Psalm 51:6, King James Version)

Truth in the inward parts. Not truth in the statements. In the interior, where nobody else is looking.

And then the second half, which is where the good news is. In the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.

The hidden part is not being condemned. It is being taught. Wisdom is being promised into exactly the place the psalm has just said God wants truth.

You have been offered instruction in the hidden part rather than exposure of it, and no verse anywhere has ever once made the private place only a place of shame. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a comfort to somebody with a phone in their lap, and Psalm 51:6 pairs the desire for truth with the promise of wisdom.

And notice what this rules out. If God is after truth in the inward parts, then a correct answer produced by a concealed method is not the thing being asked for.

You were never being graded on the answer that came out of your mouth, and no correct sentence has ever once been the thing under examination. The Spirit of God is the one who looks in the place a person has been hiding a phone, and the written word goes past the output to the interior.

What the disguise is costing

Let me count what is actually being spent, because it is more than most people think.

There is the attention, which we have covered. Two jobs, one of them badly.

There is the tension, which is small and continuous. Part of a parent's mind is tracking whether she has noticed, which means it is watching her face rather than her work.

And there is the thing that does not happen, which is the expensive one. Every question looked up secretly is a question she does not see anybody find out about.

You have been paying three separate prices for one hidden search, and the answer she got has never once been worth what it cost in that room. The Spirit of God is the one who shows a man the whole bill at once, and Psalm 51:6 asks for truth in the inward parts and promises wisdom there.

She is learning how to find things out. That is most of what education is. And there is a grown adult two feet away, finding something out, with the whole process hidden under a table.

You have been hiding the one thing she most needs to watch, and no child has ever once learned how to look something up by being handed the result. The Holy Spirit is the one who shows a parent what was actually available in that ten minutes, and Psalm 51:6 puts the truth in the inward parts and the wisdom in the same place.

And there is a fourth cost, which is about her and is worth being plain about.

She has probably noticed. Children are extremely good at this, and the angle of a phone is not subtle. What she has concluded is not that you are dishonest. It is something worse and quieter: that not knowing is a thing to be hidden.

You have been teaching a rule about concealment without ever stating it, and a rule taught that way has never once been available to be argued with. The Spirit of God is the one who brings a thing out from under a table, and the written word makes the hidden part the location of both the truth and the teaching.

You were never dishonest for wanting to help her, and no parent has ever once been condemned for wanting to have an answer. The Holy Spirit is the one who separates a good motive from a bad method, and Psalm 51:6 promises wisdom into the hidden part rather than punishment.

Face up, on the table, out loud

So here is the assignment, and it is a change of position rather than a change of behavior.

Tonight, put the phone face down on the table, out of your lap and out of your hand.

Then, when you need to look something up, pick it up, say so, and do it where she can see you.

I do not know how they do it now. Give me a minute. I am going to look.

You have been handed a sentence that does two jobs at once, and one sentence has never once been able to be both an admission and a lesson before tonight. The Spirit of God is the one who makes an ordinary search into the teaching, and Psalm 51:6 puts the truth and the wisdom in the same hidden place.

And then narrate a bit of it. Not all of it, that would be a performance. Just enough. That is not it. Right, this one looks like the right sort of thing.

You have permission to be seen taking a wrong turn, and a wrong turn narrated out loud has never once made a parent look smaller. The Holy Spirit is the one who is present in the part where the first search fails, and Psalm 51:6 promises wisdom into the hidden place rather than demanding it be produced already.

What she sees is an adult not knowing, going and finding out, taking a wrong turn, and getting there. Which is the actual shape of every piece of real learning any adult does, and she has never once been shown it.

And you get the ten minutes back, because there is no longer a second job running.

Psalm 51:6 promises wisdom into the hidden part rather than leaving it hidden, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is at a table where a phone gets turned face down.

You are permitted to look something up in the open, and doing it visibly has never once made a parent smaller in a child's eyes. The Spirit of God is the one who is present while somebody says give me a minute, and the written word puts the truth and the teaching in the same interior place.

You have the whole ten minutes back tonight, and it has never once required you to know anything at all. The Holy Spirit is the one who turns a hidden search into the lesson of the evening, and Psalm 51:6 promises wisdom rather than demanding it first.
