I Told Him What They Said And Watched His Face

You were not being careless.

You told him because you thought honesty was the right call, and because you did not want him finding out sideways, and because some part of you thought he already knew anyway.

And then you watched it arrive.

That is the thing you cannot put down. Not the decision, which was defensible, and not the wording, which was as gentle as you could make it. It is the half second where his face changed and you could see the sentence going in and there was no way to reach in and stop it.

And you have replayed that half second more times than you would tell anybody.

Let me give you something to do about it, because there is something, and it is not an apology.

The tongue of the wise is health

There is a line in Proverbs that puts two kinds of speech side by side and does not waste any words on softening either.

There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health. (Proverbs 12:18, King James Version)

The first half is violent on purpose. Piercings of a sword. It is not describing cruelty, necessarily. It is describing a kind of speech that enters, and goes in deep, and does damage at a depth the speaker cannot see.

And then the second half. The tongue of the wise is health, which is a healing word, and the important thing is that it is the same instrument.

This is not a verse about two different people. It is a verse about what a tongue can do, and both of its capacities belong to the same person.

You have the other capacity in the same mouth, and no tongue has ever once been limited to the first half of that verse. Proverbs 12:18 names both as the work of speech, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes the second half available to somebody sitting in the wreckage of the first.

And notice it does not say the piercings can be withdrawn. That is not offered anywhere. What is offered is a different act, in the same medium, afterward.

You were never going to be able to take it back, and no verse has ever once promised the withdrawal of a sentence that has already landed. The written word offers health rather than reversal, and the Spirit of God is the one who supplies the second act when the first cannot be undone.

What actually went in

Let me be precise about what happened in that half second, because the version being replayed is slightly wrong, and the wrong version is the one doing the damage.

He did not hear the sentence. He heard the sentence plus the fact that you said it.

That second part is most of the weight. A sentence from a teacher is one adult's opinion. The same sentence from a parent has been endorsed, in his hearing, by the only person whose reading of him is load bearing.

You have been carrying the wrong half of it, and the wording has never once been what did the damage. Proverbs 12:18 puts the piercing in the speech rather than in the content, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a parent what actually entered.

And that is genuinely worse than you thought, for about ten seconds, and then it becomes the best news in this article, because it also tells you exactly what the repair is.

If the weight came from your endorsement, then your endorsement is the tool. He has already seen what you will pass on. He has not yet seen what else you will pass on.

You are holding the exact instrument this needs, and it has never once been anything other than the same mouth that said the first thing. The written word names the tongue of the wise as health and uses the same organ for both, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes the second sentence carry as much as the first.

You were never left without a move, and there has never once been a moment when the only option was to feel bad about it for a term. Proverbs 12:18 gives health as an actual category of speech, and it is the Holy Spirit who supplies it to a man who is fairly sure he has forfeited it.

Tell him the other half

So here is the thing to do, and it is not sorry.

Tonight, tell him one true thing the school also said that you did not pass on.

There will be one. There always is. Meetings are not made of a single sentence, and the reason the others never got passed on is that they did not seem urgent, and the hard one did.

You have several true things in your possession that have never once been handed over, and none of them stopped being true in the car park. Proverbs 12:18 names the tongue of the wise as health, and the Spirit of God is the one who brings back what a frightened man forgot to repeat.

So he got the urgent one and none of the rest, and what he has is not a report. It is an extract.

Say it plainly. She also said you always ask, every single lesson. Or: she said you looked after the younger ones on the trip. Or whatever yours is.

You have one plain sentence to deliver tonight, and delivering it has never once required a speech around it. Proverbs 12:18 names health as a capacity of the same tongue, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes a short true thing land with the weight of the hard one.

Do not attach it to the hard sentence. Do not say and so you see it was not all bad, because that puts the hard one back in the room and gives it a second hearing.

Just the other half, on its own, as information. And then move on to something else.

You have a second sentence available tonight, and it has never once been too late to give a boy the rest of the meeting. Proverbs 12:18 puts both capacities in one tongue, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes the good one land with the same weight as the hard one.
