They Told Me He Is Behind

You have been carrying one sentence around for about three weeks.

You could not tell me much else about that meeting. You know roughly how long it took and where you sat and that it was fine. And you have one sentence, in a particular tone, that has been playing in you since, usually at about eleven at night.

And it has grown. That is what these sentences do. What was said in a corridor in four seconds has become, in your head, a description of your child's future and a comment on the kind of parent you are.

I want to do two things carefully, and both of them matter.

The first: I am not going to tell you the school is wrong, or that teachers do not understand your child, or that you should go in and challenge it. That would feel good for an evening and it would cost you the one working relationship you have around this. Most teachers are doing an enormous job with a lot of children, and the fact that they mentioned it means they were paying attention to yours.

The second: I am not going to tell you it does not matter. You did not imagine the concern and it was said for a reason, and pretending otherwise would insult you.

What I want to do is separate two things that arrived in the same sentence, because they are not the same and you have been carrying them as one.

Man looketh on the outward appearance

There is a moment where God corrects a prophet about how measurement works, and it is not a small correction.

But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart. (1 Samuel 16:7, King James Version)

Man looketh on the outward appearance.

Now, notice this is said to a prophet. Not to somebody careless. Samuel is a serious man doing a serious job well, and he still measured by what was visible, because that is what people do and it is not a moral failing.

You were never being told the measurement was false, and no correction in that passage has ever once denied what Samuel could see. 1 Samuel 16:7 leaves the height standing and refuses it the decision, and the Holy Spirit is the one who holds both halves of that at a kitchen table.

And the correction is not that the outward appearance is fake. Eliab really was tall. The measurement was accurate. It just was not the whole of the person, and it was not the thing that decided anything.

That is exactly the shape of what happened at your school.

A measurement was taken and reported. It was probably accurate: on this day, on this task, against this benchmark, your child was where they were. That is real information and the school is right to have it.

And it is a measurement of an outward thing, taken at one moment, by somebody who sees your child for a fraction of their life. It is true, and it is not the whole of him, and it does not decide what he is.

You have been handed a measurement rather than a description, and no measurement anywhere has ever once been able to say what a person is. 1 Samuel 16:7 corrects a prophet for reading the visible as the whole, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps an accurate number from becoming a verdict.

You are the parent of somebody God sees entirely, and a measurement has never once been able to contain a person. First Samuel 16:7 corrects a prophet for measuring by the visible without ever calling the measurement false, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a parent hold a report without letting it become a verdict.

Report and verdict arrived together

Here is the practical separation, and it is the whole article.

Two things arrived in that meeting and only one of them came from the school.

The report is what they said: a fact about where he is with something, at a point in time.

You have one true thing and one manufactured thing in the same memory, and they have never once arrived from the same place. The written word separates the seeing of the outward from the seeing of the heart, and the Spirit of God is the one who tells a parent which of the two they are carrying. Specific, limited, useful, and about a task.

The verdict is what you made in the car on the way home. That he is going to struggle. That this is how it will be. That there was more to be done, earlier, and that somebody else would have seen it. That it says something about your house.

The school did not say any of that. Nobody said it. You constructed it in a car park out of four seconds of speech, and it has been running for three weeks.

You are able to separate what was said from what got built afterward, and the two have never once come out of the same room. The written word denies the outward appearance the final word without denying that it was seen, and the Spirit of God is the one who does the separating in a parent who cannot.

And the reason it matters is that the report is workable and the verdict is not. You can do something about a specific gap in a specific thing, ten minutes at a time. You cannot do anything at all about a verdict, because a verdict is not a task, it is a weight.

You are able to keep the report and put down the verdict, and only one of those ever came from anybody but you. The written word calls the visible measurement real while denying it the final word, and the Spirit of God is the one who separates a fact from a sentence.

One sentence, one question

So here is the assignment.

Write down one sentence they said, and one question you will ask next time.

The sentence first, in their words, as close as memory allows. Not the version that gets carried at eleven at night. What was actually said.

You have one sentence to write down tonight, and it has never once been longer on paper than it was in your chest. 1 Samuel 16:7 keeps the measurement and denies it the last word, and the Spirit of God is the one who is present while the real words get copied out. Often when a parent does this they find it was narrower than the thing in their head: a comment about one subject rather than a statement about a child.

You have permission to arrive with a question rather than a defense, and a question has never once been the weaker thing to bring into a small room. The written word corrects the measuring rather than the measurer, and the Holy Spirit is the one who supplies a specific thing to ask.

Then one question for next time. One. Something specific enough to be answerable: what does he find hardest in that, or what would you do at home for ten minutes, or is there a bit he has understood that I could build on.

Write it down and keep it somewhere, because at the next meeting you will be nervous and you will not think of it.

And notice what that does. It turns you from somebody receiving a verdict into somebody with a question, and those are completely different people in a room.

You are able to hold their words exactly and bring a question back, and it has never once required you to argue with anybody. First Samuel 16:7 lets the visible be true and not final, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with you at the table with the pen.
