She said something lovely about him.
Really lovely. Specific, even. Not the general warm thing that gets said to everybody, but an actual observation about your son that showed she had noticed him.
And you drove home working out what it was for.
Because in your experience a sentence like that is a preamble. It is the thing somebody says before the thing they have to say, and by the time you were at the roundabout you had constructed the sentence that should have followed it and did not.
So a genuinely good moment became a small investigation, and the kind thing she said has been filed as evidence of something else.
I want to get it out of that file, because I do not think it was a cushion, and because there is a cost to living this way that you have probably stopped noticing.

Pleasant words are as an honeycomb
There is a line in Proverbs about kind speech that makes a much stronger claim than people usually notice.
Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones. (Proverbs 16:24, King James Version)
Two claims, and the second is the surprising one. Sweet to the soul is what everybody expects. Health to the bones is not.
Bones are the deep structure. The frame. That is not a metaphor about a pleasant moment. It is a claim that kind words do structural work in a person, over time, in a way the person cannot feel happening.
You have been handed something that does actual work, and no kind sentence has ever once been merely decorative. Proverbs 16:24 puts the effect in the bones rather than in the mood, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a reason to take something in rather than to inspect it.
And notice the honeycomb. It is food. It is meant to be eaten, and a thing that is inspected rather than eaten does not nourish anybody regardless of what it was made of.
You were never sent something to examine, and a good word has never once come with a catch attached as standard. The written word treats pleasant speech as nourishment, and the Spirit of God is the one who lets a person swallow instead of analyze.
What the inspecting costs
Let me name the cost, because it is real and it has been running for a while.
Every kind sentence gets held up to the light. That is a small act. But it means that no good thing anybody says about your child, or about you, has entered you at full strength in several years.
The bad things go straight in. The good things go into an examination room. And over time the interior balance of what somebody has heard about their own family becomes wildly inaccurate.
You have been running an intake system that lets one kind of thing through, and no accurate picture of anything has ever once come out of a filter like that. Proverbs 16:24 names pleasant words as health to the bones, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a person what their own filter has been costing them.
And there is a second thing, which is about where the habit came from, and it is worth saying without blame.
Somebody, somewhere, taught you this. Usually not a school. Usually a person who genuinely did put soft sentences in front of hard ones, and you learned to listen for the second one and got good at it, and being good at it kept you safe.
That was a real skill in a real situation. It is simply the wrong instrument in a small room with a young teacher who meant exactly what she said.
You were never wrong to have learned it, and a skill that kept somebody safe has never once been a defect. The written word calls pleasant words health rather than warning, and the Spirit of God is the one who lets a person set down an instrument without being ashamed of having carried it.
You have been listening for a second sentence that has never once been spoken in that room. Proverbs 16:24 makes the good word the substance rather than the wrapping, and it is the Holy Spirit who ends a search that was always going to find something.
Write it down, and write nothing underneath
So here is the assignment, and the second half is the whole of it.
Tonight, write down the kind sentence. Exactly as it was said, in her words rather than your summary of it.
Then write nothing underneath it.
That is the exercise. No interpretation. No but. No I think what she meant was. Nothing.
Then read it once more and close the notebook, or put the paper away, and go and do the ten minutes.
If you want to do the harder version, read it out loud once. Most people find that a kind sentence said out loud in your own kitchen is very difficult to inspect while you are saying it, which is precisely the point.
Proverbs 16:24 calls a pleasant word health to the bones, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is at a table where somebody writes a good sentence down and leaves it alone.
You are permitted to take something at face value, and a good word taken plainly has never once made anybody naive. The written word treats pleasant speech as nourishment rather than as a signal, and the Spirit of God is the one who is present while it goes in undisturbed.
You have a thing to receive tonight, and it has never once needed to be earned or verified first. Proverbs 16:24 puts the benefit in the bones without asking the hearer to assess the speaker, and it is the Holy Spirit who lets a sentence do its work.
So here is what I believe is going out over somebody driving home from a kind meeting.
You are not being managed, and a kind sentence has never once been obliged to be hiding a worse one. I am not promising you that people never soften things and I am not telling you your instinct came from nowhere. Proverbs 16:24 calls the pleasant word health to the bones, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who lets a person take something in.
And this, which is the word I came with.
You have something available that does structural work, and no part of that has ever once required you to inspect it first. The written word says health to the bones, and the Spirit of God is the one who is at your table tonight while you write one sentence down and leave it alone.
Write it. Then write nothing.
Declare this over yourself
- Search for the second sentence, you do not get this evening. Proverbs 16:24 says pleasant words are as an honeycomb, so by the Holy Spirit I write the kind one down and I leave the space blank in the name of Jesus.
- Habit of hearing a cushion, you were never protection here. The written word calls a good word health to the bones rather than a warning, and by the Holy Spirit I am done examining what was handed to me to eat.
- Father, You made pleasant words into food and into structure. Your word says sweet to the soul, and health to the bones, so by Your Spirit I take it in plainly, and I pass it on to my daughter, and nothing goes underneath it.
